Presentation
Donald Ross created the course in the early Twenties. The signature hole is the 3rd, which extends for nearly 200 yards to a Redan green.
Plainfield has attracted a number of top tournaments over the years, including the US Amateur in 1978, and the US Women’s Open in 1987. The Barclays event in the PGA’s FedEx Cup in 2011, won by Bill Haas, was played at Plainfield.
The modest scale of the amenities is proportionate to the modest grounds, and service is top-notch. The course has a slope rating of 146/75.
3 from the tips, and proper tee selection is the key to enjoyable—as opposed to grueling—golf here. The club also had another nine, laid out by Tom Bendelow, from 1921 to 1933, but these holes were given over to the public.
It was also known as Hillside Tennis Club until 1904, when it became Plainfield Country Club. It is located in Plainfield, New Jersey, and was founded in 1890.
