Overview

Winged Foot’s West is the club’s premier course, and it achieved early fame as the site of Bobby Jones’s victory in the 1929 US Open Championship. The golf here just doesn’t live up to the reputation, for the holes are unremarkable, and made challenging only because of their lengthiness and tricky greens.
In the 1959 Open, Billy Casper was victorious in part because he played the par 3 3rd short and made it in with a single chip and putt. Among the golf royalty who have been part of the life of the club are Claude Harmon, pro for over thirty years and 1948 Masters champ, and his golf-playing four sons.
Butch, coach to both Greg Norman and Tiger Woods, is a member of the board of directors of the Winged Foot Golf Club. The club’s 18-Hole East Course was opened in 1923.
The West Course was built in 1923, and underwent extensive renovations in preparation for the Open in 2006. The East Course has been open to the public since 1953.
