Overview

Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, founded in 1891, is one of the historic golfing institutions in the United States. The original twelve hole golf course was designed by Willie Davis, and expanded to eighteen holes in the spring of 1895.
The present course, designed by William Flynn and built by Dick Wilson of Toomey and Flynn, was opened for the 1931 season. Shinnecock is a private club.
All guests must be signed in by an accompanying member, at the front desk before play. No guests will be permitted to tee off without a green fee ticket.
The back nine are even more compelling, and build to a closing stretch that was the scene of much drama in the 1986, 1995 and 2004 US Opens. The length may now be insufficient for tournament play; one only hopes that nothing too drastic will be done to this masterpiece in preparation for the scheduled 2018 Open.
The National, which is right next door, and Maidstone, said to be the finest and loveliest of the trio.
