Overview

Ganton is an example of that rare breed of English courses known as inland links. The course is laid out on quiet undulating heathland which with a sandy subsoil is very freedraining.
The fairways are predominantly bents and fescues, which provide a firm base for all well executed shots. The Amateur Championship (which is otherwise only played on true links courses) is played there, as have been the Curtis, Ryder and Walker Cups at various times.
The 6340-meter course is kept up to tournament standards because the terrain is coastal, its turf solid and resistant to flooding. It is remarkable that the century-old Ganton, like a few other historic layouts, continues to attract such venues.
It was said that the lies at Ganton provide the perfect place to practice one’s brassie shots; not that today’s players carry, let alone need a brassie. Players will need to think strategically about choices of clubs and of approach in order to get a decent score.
