Hogan helped to establish the club as a major venue for championships. Colonial has long been one of the events on the US Tour, and has attracted the 1971 US Open, the 1975 Tournament Players Championship and the 1991 US Women’s Open.
The layout is an homage to Hogan: no trickery but supremely challenging, it demands careful shaping of shots. « A straight ball will get you in more trouble at Colonial than any course I know, » Hogan said.
The 2003 US Tour where Annika Sorenstam competed with the men was held at Colonial. The tournament was the first to be held on the PGA Tour since the US Open in 1986.
The US Open was played at Colonial for the first time in 1971. It was also the home base for Ben Hogan in the 1940s and 1950s.
The course was designed by Perry Maxwell, who was a second-tier designer at the time.
