The strong breezes, though, are quite links-like, particularly in the summer months. The course has accordingly been designed with broad fairways and generous greens.
At the same time, a dense and gnarly rough, which can be escaped, but not easily, awaits the errant shot, and the pot bunkers, faced with turf like those at Troon and Royal Lytham, command respect. There is a touch of Scotland and Ireland to the dunes and fescue, if one imagines salt water replacing the fresh water of the Great Lakes.
The state of Michigan has the potential for some fine links-style golf along its extensive coastline.
